By taking the time to read this blog, you’re one step closer to beginning your custom engagement ring design process.
When you want to custom design an engagement ring with Roman Malakov, your options for customization are numerous. We’ll work with you at every step to ensure you understand your choices and get any questions answered promptly.
The process to design an engagement ring begins with the center stone. When choosing your diamond, you’ll want to consider the 4 Cs of diamond education, which include cut, color, clarity, and carat. You need to think about what diamond shape you want the center stone to be, as that will significantly impact the setting and overall design options for the remainder of the ring. Certain shapes, like round and princess, are more easily integrated into any ring setting than more unique shapes, like marquise and heart, which will have limited options for ring settings.
While the most traditional center stone for engagement rings is, of course, a diamond, some women prefer to have more unique engagement rings with non-diamond center stones. Sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and other gemstones commonly take the place of diamonds in custom-designed engagement rings, so it’s important to know which center stone your future fiancée prefers.
After you’ve found the perfect center stone, you need to explore the actual design of the engagement ring. It can be very helpful to know the overall engagement ring style you’re trying to recreate, such as traditional, vintage, or modern. If you’re aiming to surprise your fiancée-to-be, try to bring some pictures of rings that she likes so we can see what your end result should resemble.
At this point, it’s also good to know what design elements you do or do not want to be included. Should the engagement ring be a solitaire, halo, three-stone, or side-stone design? Should it have an eternity band or not? Do you prefer a traditional yellow gold, a more modern white gold, or a unique rose gold when it comes to metal options? Some of these decisions may need some input from your bride-to-be, so if you haven’t already found out her preferences, now is the time to do so.
Another part of the initial step to design engagement rings is sizing the ring properly. While some modifications can be made after the ring is created, how much it can be resized is limited, so it’s best to get as close as possible to her ring size. As you design her engagement ring, you may be trying to surprise her and would like to limit the number of questions you ask about her preferences. If that’s the case, you may need to try to secretly find out her ring size. If it’s not a complete surprise or if she knows you’re already in the process of shopping for an engagement ring, it may be okay to just outright ask her.
Once you’ve made all the big decisions about design elements and the overall look of the engagement ring, the jewelry design experts at Roman Malakov will take over the process. They’ll create a three-dimensional rendering so you can see what your ring will look like when it’s complete. Then you’ll get to take a close look at the design and respond with your comments. If alterations are needed, they will be handled promptly, and then the custom-designed engagement ring will be sent back to you for your final approval.
After that, the handcrafting of the actual ring will begin. This is one of the most exciting parts of the custom engagement ring design process. This step can be quite lengthy, as it involves professional artisans carefully crafting each intricate detail of the ring, using only tools that are controlled by their hands. The ring setting will be precisely created based on the approved rendering, and then it will be polished and prepared for the stones to be set.
Expert stone setters will take over from here, hand-preparing the prongs and other supports needed for securing the stones. The stones will be set into the piece with the utmost precision and attention to detail, ensuring they are perfectly balanced and totally secure. Our master stone setters are some of the most skilled, experienced experts in the industry, and we’re confident that you’ll love the ring that they help create.
The final step of the custom engagement ring design process is polishing and finishing the final piece. Finishing involves adding any textures or finishes that you want on the ring, such as a satin finish, sandblasted appearance, etc. And with an additional polish, the ring becomes perfectly shiny and full of sparkle for you to pick up and present to your soon-to-be fiancée.
We always look forward to this moment, as all of our hard work and your passion and love are put together into this extraordinary piece of jewelry. We love seeing our clients’ reactions to their labors of love, and we know they look forward to presenting a gorgeous ring to the love of their lives.
